There was a time when swedes had a very hard time at home. Religious prosecution, land prices, and a complete lack of social rights for the working class made half the population leave for ‘the promised land’ between 1850 and the great war.
Today swedes at home are very secure, in their place and in themselves. The great migration west is never talked about. What swedes like to discuss now is the stream of immigrants coming to Sweden. These are people from war zones and all over the developing world who want a chance for a better life and a future for their children. Just like all immigrants always have been?
